After watching a special called Planet in Peril on CNN, I was inspired to visit the mountain gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda. What struck me in the program was the impact that land encroachment, poaching, and the bushmeat trade were having on the gorilla population. There are only 720 mountain gorillas in the world, which amounts to roughly one gorilla for every nine million people, a sobering statistic. The gorillas I encountered were charming and adorable, with personalities all their own. In addition, I met some wonderful locals, both Ugandan and Rwandan, that I will remain in touch with for life. The combination of their personal histories and current realities made the experience among the most powerful I have ever had. I am thrilled to share my experience with you through a selection of my photographs. |
