Historically known as Constantinople, Istambul is the cultural, economic, and financial centre of Turkey with a population of 12.8 million.

Ankara is the capital of Turkey and the country's second largest city after Istanbul.

Aphrodisias site is located near the modern village of Geyre. Aphrodisias was named after Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love.

Bosphorus is the strait between the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara in Istanbul.

Bursa is frequently cited as Green Bursa in a reference to its plentiful parks and gardens, as well as to the vast forests in its surroundings.

Canakkale is a province of Turkey, located in the northwestern part of the country. It takes its name from the town of Canakkale.

Cappadocia is a region in central Turkey and is noted for its exceptional natural wonders. The area is a famous and popular tourist destination, as it has many areas with unique geological, historic and cultural features.

Derinkuyu is a town and district in the Central Anatolia region. It is notable for its large multi-level underground city. The Derinkuyu underground city has at least eight levels.

Ephesus was an ancient Greek city, and later a major Roman city. It had a population of more than 250,000 in the 1st century BC, which made Ephesus the second largest city in the world.

Gallipoli derives its name from the Greek Kallipolis, meaning Beautiful City.

Gordion was the capital of the Phrygian Kingdom during the eighth century BC. Gordion is located on the Sakarya River, 70 miles southwest of Ankara. Alexander the Great is said to have cut the Gordion knot here.

Goreme is a district of the Nevsehir Province. After the eruption of Mount Erciyes about 2000 years ago, ash and lava formed soft rocks. People of Goreme, at the heart of the Cappadocia Region, realizedthat these soft rocks could be easily carved out to form houses, churches, monasteries.

Hierapolis, or holy city, was the ancient Greek city on top of hot springs. The hot springs there have been used as a spa since the 2nd century BC.

Izmir is Turkey's third most populous city and the country's second largest port city after Istanbul. It boasts 3,500 years of recorded urban history.

Kaymakli is one of the largest underground settlements in the region. The tunnels are low, narrow, and steeply inclined. It is estimated that this underground city had a capacity of 20,000 people.

Konya, a city in the Central Anatolia Region, has the reputation of being one of the more religiously conservative metropolitan centers in Turkey. Konya was the final home of Rumi, whose followers established in 1273 the Mevlevi Sufi order of Islam in this city and became known as the whirling dervishes.

Pamukkale contains hot springs and travertines, terraces of carbonate minerals left by the flowing water. In this area, there are 17 hot water springs in which the temperature ranges from 35C (95F) to 100C (212F).

In antiquity, Phrygia was a kingdom in the west central part of Anatolia. Pictured is a detail from a reconstruction of a Phrygian building at Pararli.

A detail of Sardis bath complex. The oldest archeological finds date from the Late Bronze Age. As a city, Sardis had great importance for 1500 years. Its fortified citadel occupied a key position on the route from the inland to the Aegean Sea.

Selcuk is one of the most visited touristic destinations in Turkey. The town is known for its closeness to the ancient city of Ephesus, House of the Virgin Mary and Seljukian works of art. The 6th century Basilica of St. John the Apostle, which, some claim, is built on the site of the Apostle's tomb, is also inside the town. Depicted is the grand fortress of Selcuk on Ayasoluk Hill.

Troy was a city, both factual and legendary, located in northwest Anatolia. It is best known for being the focus of the Trojan War described in the Iliad, one of the two epic poems attributed to Homer.

Uchisar, a sleepy little town, makes an excellent base from which to explore the unique Cappadocian landscape.
